Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum

Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum in the centre of Innsbruck shows historical and historical art exhibits from the stone age to the present day, all year round – a roughly 30,000 year journey through time. Exhibited are, among others, roman and gothic masterpieces, a distinguished collection of Deutsch paintings, exhibits from the baroque period and the 19th Century, a collection of precious musical instruments, the Biedermeier collection and the modern gallery.

Tyrolean Folk Art Museum

The Tyrolean Folk Art Museum, opened in Innsbruck in 1929, is among the most beautiful of its kind in Europe. Many of the pieces were collected from the old county of Tyrol with what is Trentino today (formerly Welschtirol) and the Ladin valleys around the Dolomites. The pieces in the collection come from various levels of society: the peasantry, middle classes and the nobility. The collection is centred on artisan handicrafts and applied arts, the cottage industry, folk piety, masks and traditional dress.

Schloss Ambras (Ambras Castle) – Innsbruck Art History Museum

The middle age Ambras fortress was rebuilt into a renaissance castle in the 16th Century by the Tyrolean sovereign, Archduke Ferdinand II. The armoury and the cabinet of arts and curiosities house many interesting exhibits. In addition, this impressive building and the castle park turn into one of the stages for the highlight event, “Innsbruck Early Music Festival”.

Under the heading “a piece of happiness”, the new leader of the Innsbruck Festival, Alessandro De Marchi, has put Italian renaissance and baroque period music centre stage at the festival.

Zeughaus Innsbruck (Innsbruck Armoury)

The “Zeughaus” in Innsbruck once served as the weapons depot for Emperor Maximilian I and today houses a museum dedicated to Tyrol’s cultural history. Important stops on the journey are the prehistoric discoveries, the silver mining and salt extraction. Other topics include the globe of the geographer, Peter Anichs, the 1809 rebellion, the start of tourism and the two World Wars.
